Yeah, me neither, usually. But I just ended a really useful one. And under time too. A friend of mine I contacted about a collaboration over some new data is really excited about what I showed him. In fact, he says he wants to go in for another big grant with me on it. It turns out to align really well with what he is doing.
This is one of the times when science really gets fun to do, when you can synergize your ideas with someone else’s and maybe discover cool new stuff that really makes a difference.

I’m jealous! Basic research can be such fun. Right now I’m reading all about the latest development in asset managements systems for storm sewers so I can write an asset management plan for one of our contracts. After that will be a deep dive into codes and ordinances....

Im jealous of someone having a productive zoom.

Oh Tish! when you talk codes and ordinances, my blood boils!
Really, it’s more fun when you have money. Too bad getting that money takes up so much of the job.

Yeah, one of the things I’ve noticed is that, since meetings are cheaper and easier to have now, we have a lot more of them and for a lot dumber reasons. Used to be one half day sales meeting per quarter with lunch included that was scheduled months in advance so you could plan around it , now, it’s one or two video calls a week, for an hour+ at a time, scheduled at the last minute, with only one mostly irrelevant agenda item. Oh, and that hour morphs into 2 hours when the meeting host runs into technical issues.

That’s one thing I don’t miss - having to be researcher, grant writer, and salesperson. At least where I am I get to be the doer instead of the seeker of funding. I hate sales.

In person meetings might have included lunch, but I could only surreptitiously glance at my phone for distraction. Zoom meetings don’t bring lunch, but I can surf Oppo and no one can stop me from day drinking.
It’s a toss up.

Imagine a reality where grant application and review was handled through CL.

That sounds really awesome! I like science for the sake of it sometimes - what happens if I do this? What causes this? Etc. As an engineer, my job is mainly applications, trying to make things work or optimize them to work better . Very little room for big discoveries .
That being said, I’m excited that I am also currently working on a proposal for funding for a collaborative program with another group . I don’t think we’re going to discover anything, but we’re gonna mash some currently separate things together into one box to save time, money, weight, space, etc. And saving time and money always makes people happy!

That can be really satisfying too. At the end of the day, doing something worthwhile that helps people is where we all hope to get.

I'm back to normal work routine Monday-Thursday, so day drinking would probably get me fired

Craigslist?
Best research deal in town. 20 years of experience. No lowball offers, I know what I’ve got.

That could be a snag.

I’m interested in your grant. Is the money still available?

The problem is he’s now ruined it for the rest of us. Once management sees it’s been successful once, it’s all they’ll ever want to do ever again!

My school uses BlueJeans, which I’d never heard of before but actually works very well and consistently .

I’ve never heard of it either, but that’s cool. My university has a corporate zoom arrangement. So, that’s what we all use. My daughter’s school uses MS Teams, and she likes it better than Zoom.

MS Teams is laggy AF and slow in the menus but very capable. Blue Jeans is fast, efficient, and versatile but limited in applications. They host web browser one way meetings well though. Everything else is in the app and I like it better than Zoom or Meet. I believe it’s a paid subscription model to host but not sure as it is tied to my university account and I can still make meetings.

Everyone has to use what their organization standardizes on. Once it gets to us end users, the decision is made, and they don’t care what we think.

There IS a reason for that. It's hard going between MS Teams, Canvas, and Blue jeans for different classes.
